Model List:

As can be seen from the table below the two layer version is by far the most common 58mm SAK, although many models have been withdrawn.
Also several models are simply scale (tools or materials) variations on the Classic - featuring the Classic main layer toolset - See column in table.

Layers and Springs

The layer designation of the 58mm models can be slightly confusing due to the way they are constructed.

Unlike the 91mm series, that has many spring types, the 58mm series only uses one spring type, usually with the key ring loop as an addition to one spring.
The springs are 'floating' and paired 'back-to-back' inside the knife. There are four rivets, two of which operate as pivots, one at each end and side - see image.
Tools usually use one spring (knife blades, nail file etc), with only two of the tools using two springs (scissors, combo blades).
So the number of layers in any particular model is different idepending upon whether the tools, or the springs, are counted as the layers!

The convention used by SAKWiki to determine the number of layers in any model, is to specify the largest number of side-by-side tools for that model.

So for instance the Classic and Rambler are both designated as two-layer knives even though the Classic has two pairs of springs and the Rambler three, and therefore the Rambler is wider than the Classic . There is another curious situation with the Drifter and Vagabond. Both are exactly the same width with four pairs of springs internally, and the same number of tools, yet due to the tool layout, the Drifter is classified as a three layer tool - with three on each side, and the Vagabond as a four layer tool - four on one side, two on the other!
